Mobile HD Dome Theater visits Surline

Date: February 10, 2018 |

As a result of a grant from the Ogemaw Thrift Shop in West Branch, a dome theater recently spent two days at Surline Middle School. “It would cost us a fortune to take our science classes to the closest planetarium, but because of this generous donation, we were able to bring the planetarium to the students,” said Wendy Tuttle, principal at Surline Middle School.

The dome theater is much more than a portable HD planetarium. Developed by Rice University and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, with the support of NASA, this theater is 16 feet wide and 10 feet tall. It can hold 35-55 individuals depending on age. This interactive theater features highly innovative, educational, entertainment, and unlimited on-demand programs.

When you enter this unique theater, you are surrounded with stunning visuals and out-of-this-world knowledge. The dome features award winning narrators like Tom Hanks, Sigourney Weaver, Ed Helms, Harrison Ford, and Walter Cronkite.

“Awesome, amazing, really good,” were some of the comments made by the students as they exited the dome. Pictured are Mrs. Wiegerink’s sixth grade science class and some of the staff from the Ogemaw Thrift Shop.
